Councillors Network Launch Success

The first Christians on the Left councillor network forum was held online in early November 2021.

At our inaugural meeting on Zoom, we had 15 members present from right across the UK. It was great to also have Louise Davies Director of Christians on the Left, with us for our first gathering, to encourage us in our calling and character to follow Jesus, and represent the values of his Kingdom in the world of local politics.

The purpose of the forum is to provide a place of support, prayer and mutual encouragement with the unique challenges and demands of being an elected councillor, and a christian - and how to ensure that we stay true to our calling to follow Christ, and also represent all our constituents in a faithful manner.

Members who attended gave feedback on the challenges and opportunities they face on being a local councillor, and how we can provide mutual support, solidarity and prayer for one another. Members reflected that it can sometimes be a lonely calling as a councillor, and also as a christian, with the challenge of not always being understood fully in your own council chamber, and also your local church. This new forum will help to be a safe place to provide this support for those outworking their christian faith as a local councillor.

It was a really positive first meeting, and all who attended gave feedback that they would be keen for the forum to meet up to 4 times a year, online - with the possibility of meeting up together in person at party conference each year too. A whatsapp group will also be formed to help provide support, encouragement and prayer to those who get involved with the forum too.

The group is being facilitated by Cllr Emma Flint, Leeds City Council and Cllr Gavin White, Manchester City Council - get in touch if you would like to be part of the future meetings. Email info@christiansontheleft.org.uk ATTN: Councillors Network. The next meeting will be in January 2022.
