Christians on the Left nominates Andy Burnham as Leader of the Labour Party

Christians on the Left is pleased to nominate Andy Burnham as the next leader of the Labour Party.

At a time when our country is looking for hope, compassion and a renewed sense of purpose, we believe Andy offers a vision of leadership that is rooted in service, community and the common good.

Throughout his public life, Andy has demonstrated a deep understanding of the contribution faith communities make to our society. His recognition that churches and faith groups are essential partners in tackling poverty, supporting vulnerable people and strengthening communities reflects the values that have always been part of the Labour movement.

We are particularly encouraged by Andy’s commitment to ensuring that people of faith have a meaningful voice in public life. At a time when faith is too often misunderstood or used as a tool for division, he recognises both the positive contribution of faith communities and the need to challenge those who seek to distort Christianity for exclusionary or extremist political ends.

As Andy said in his message to our members, “we cannot achieve change, locally or nationally, without the voice of faith groups being at the table.” We welcome that commitment and share his belief that Christians, churches, and all faith groups, have an important role to play in shaping a fairer and more compassionate society.

We also appreciate Andy's recognition of the contribution Christians on the Left has made to the Labour movement as an affiliated Socialist Society. His commitment to work with us, draw on the expertise of our members, and build a genuine partnership gives us confidence that our voice will continue to be heard.

We are nominating Andy because we believe he offers hope for a Labour Party that is ambitious for social justice, serious about partnership with faith communities, and committed to building a better future for everyone.
