We thought we'd share some of what happened on the 2017 Programme to give you a flavour...2017_Mentees_01.png

The Political Mentoring 2017 Session gather for their first meeting in Westminster in December.

The Begining...

2017_Mentees_02a.png"I love the sense of unity and purpose that I always feel when I gather with fellow Christians on the Left, and the first session of CotL's Political Mentoring Programme was no different. It was a privilege to pray together for His kingdom to come, with a shared excitement for how that will look in the work He has given each of us.

Everyone there had a very different story of how they had ended up in that room but every story reflected both God's faithfulness and His heart for justice and mercy. I'm really looking forward to working alongside this group on the programme this year as I develop new skills and learn more about how to be His hands and feet in British politics"

"For a number of years I felt the call of God into politics. Three years ago, with the blessing of my church, I left my position as a pastor and stepped into the political arena. There have been times when I have felt alone in this journey so I was absolutely thrilled to be selected for the CoTL Political Mentoring Scheme.

We met for the first time in November and it was so refreshing to be in a room of people who love God and engaged in politics. To be able to share our dreams and to pray together was an absolute gift. I am looking forward to where God will take us this year. I have a feeling that 2017 will be a year of breakthrough, miracles and fabulous memories made."

BIG thanks to and for hosting meeting this evening and for the tour of Parliament.ūüĎć

And the end...

2017_Mentees_03a.pngOn the 12th October, our 2017 grouping of mentees met officially for the last time, though this is certainly not the end… Read on to find out more! The group of 18 future candidates have gathered together across the country throughout 2017, receiving teaching and training on theological issues, campaigning, public speaking and other skills to equip them for elected office. But much more than this, the group have formed relationships both within the programme and outside it to enable them to pray, converse and encourage one another as they seek to be salt and light in the political arena.

Having met throughout the year in York, Bristol and Bolton, the October session gathered in London to hear experiences from a former Labour Council Leader and learn more on biblical economics from Tim Morley, Lecturer at Trinity School of Mission, Liverpool.

Our mentees were all assigned a mentor for the year:- many of whom are Christians on the Left Members of Parliament and offered the opportunity to meet one on one throughout the year, or to shadow some of their work in Westminster. Whilst the 2017 programme has officially ended, we are automatically enrolling all our mentees in a new alumni programme. We hope that this will enable a continued passing on of the baton, as next year’s future candidates can meet the previous cohort and enlarge their prayer networks as well as learn from those just a step or two away from them on their political journey.

We would exhort you as fellow members of Christians on the Left:- if you do nothing else, pray for the next generation of our leaders. They are the future and we are excited to see them carry God’s spirit within them to the sometimes dark and difficult places of politics.

Here are the experiences of some of our mentees this year:

"We are all facing challenging political times and so for me it is vital that I am provided with this type of support, at this time, support that not only recognises the political climate but also the impact of the Christian faith and it's perspective. I have had a brief look at the itinerary for our next meeting in January 2017 and am delighted to see that we will openly be discussing faith and power, simply awesome as it was exactly the topics I had hoped to raise.

Thank you again for inspiring us all and for my place within the team. I gladly receive it! 2017 here we come!"

"Team, support, friendship, fellowship... just some of the words that come to mind when I think of being part of the mentoring scheme. It gives me the courage to know that every step I take in the political arena I do so with a team who are praying for me and encouraging me..."

"At a time when politics is so divisive and confusing, the Christians on the Left Mentoring Scheme gave me a lot of hope. The best thing about the scheme was meeting the other mentees, who come from all walks of life but are united in faith and political convictions... More than ever, our political system needs leaders who have integrity and a vision for God's Kingdom... this programme is perfectly placed to support leaders who will go on to have a great impact in politics."

"Joining the Christians on the Left Political Mentoring Programme was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve always felt called to politics but struggled to know what steps to take next. The training and guidance I received on the course has helped me in every area of my life and - most importantly - I’ve made some lifelong friends! Thank you to everyone involved for making it such a brilliant experience"
