Love of Money

Love of money.

‘They were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and

needy.’ Ezekiel 16:49

‘But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many

foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the

love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.’ 1 Timothy 6:9,10a (NLT)

Government policy has not always followed the message of these verses; but then the church hasn’t always, either. Some people, including Christians, have begun to speak approvingly of billionaires who hoard their wealth and speculate to make even more. Decades of propaganda by incredibly rich newspaper owners has in some cases, worked.

This has an obvious impact on party funding. It’s widely reported that in the second week of the campaign, the Tories raked in £1.6m, compared with £383,000 for Labour. Humanly speaking, this is how elites stay in power. But we’re not speaking humanly …

… so IN PRAYER ask first of all for a change in own hearts, triggering an attitude change in the churches, led by openness to what the Bible says about the dangers of riches. Pray that this will enter mainstream society and government. Ask God to soften the hearts of the billionaire-owned press. Pray also about the need for reform of Party funding.

Tonight: Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn will appear separately on a BBC TV ‘Question Time’ special.

Sunday 4 June: Tim Farron (Lib Dem) and Nicola Sturgeon (SNP) questioned on TV.

‘Pivotal’ would not be too strong a word for this election. Consider whether the Lord may be asking you to fast as well as pray before or on June 8. It need not be a whole day; perhaps one meal, abstaining from ‘treats’ or luxury food/drink, or TV or social media.
