March Prayers

Opening Prayer and thanks

Almighty Father, thank you for bringing us all together in the heart of our government today and for giving us the courage to come here in fellowship.

Save us, O Lord, from being idle bystanders looking on and attempting to interpret the dilemmas of a broken world, yet rarely willing to act.

Give us compassion for the lost and confused, the weary and the oppressed.

Save us from slick and simplistic answers to human problems, which offer words but no real help.

Unsettle us, and move us on from viewing the plight of sin-scarred people, to actions that promote spiritual and inward healing and liberating forgiveness.

Cleanse our lives, that they may be instruments worthy of conveying your truth of abundant and everlasting life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

We ask in his name.  Amen.

New prayers for a new day

As we go through the launch of Christians on the Left, I ask that we all pray for our members and for those thinking of becoming members. I also ask that we pray for the many members around the country standing as candidates in local, European and parliamentary selections. We pray that they feel God's hand over them as they go through what can be challenging and stressful experiences. Let them all remember that your yoke is easy...

As well as our members and supporters, we must pray for those people in the wider world who are suffering at the moment. Whether through the extreme poverty of being born in the wrong the part of the world, or through the cruelty of the bedroom tax, we pray that God will lend them strength and encouragement to break out of the situations they're in.

Israel, Palestine and difficult prayers

Many of us have watched and read with concern the tensions between Israel and Gaza over many years.

It's hard to know how to respond to such events, to mourn with those who lose loved ones, to question and to challenge where we feel wrong has been done, to petition and challenge for change on both sides.

But how should we pray ?  And can prayers make an impact where politics has failed for generations?

Feed the poor

Lord, forgive us when we have haughty eyes,
When we say we understand,
When we ignore Your forgiving hand,
Teach us to let it be, and lay it down,
Beneath the cross of Your salvation,
Thinking only of You primarily and praying for our adversary, that lives inside each one of us,
So if we wish to feed, let us feed the poor,
Those to whom you said you would first open up the door
