Praise God! Father, Son and Holy Spirit - 10 days to polling.

"Praise the Lord!

Praise the name of the Lord!  Praise him, you who serve the Lord, you who serve in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God.

Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; celebrate his lovely name with music."  Psalm 135:1-3

"Don’t you believe that I am in my Father and my Father is in me?  The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. …  When the Spirit of truth comes, … he will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me." John 12:10; 16:13a, 14

"Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour

and power and strength belong to our God forever and ever!  Amen!" Revelation 7:12

Today we give God the first offerings of our praise because he is worthy.

That has to be the main reason.  But it’s also a question of focus.  God himself has to be our starting point in the days before this vital election. Our eyes have to be on him.  Otherwise, we shall lose our way in a maze of human wishes and worries and be more open to deception.

Perhaps first, read the above Bible passages out loud.

Then you could try the following:  Seeing God as the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit will be important in tomorrow’s entry in this diary, so that’s where we will start.  We can’t accurately describe or imagine him, but I’m going to suggest the following reflection/meditation.

If some personal trouble is getting in the way, bring it to him.  He loves you.  ‘Praise the Lord; praise God our Saviour!   Every day he carries us in his arms.’  Psalm 68:19

Ideally, take some time over each stage.

I see the Three (the Trinity, Father Son & Spirit) as golden spheres, one the traditional gold colour, the second red gold and the third white.

They are all made of light, so can take up exactly the same space at the same time; the Three are One!

God is love; the Three are Personal Beings - Persons, though not human persons.   Here, our imagination fails, but we can adore wordlessly.

Think of other qualities of God, like power, knowledge, truth, justice, grace, mercy and peace. Think about how God reflects these perfectly and humans reflect these imperfectly.

God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is infinite.

And he is eternal.

Yes – God is amazing!

Give thanks that this unimaginable Being came down to us as Jesus, the Son of God made human.

1. God himself has to be our starting point in the days before this vital election.

  • Our eyes have to be on him.
  • Give thanks that God, who is so much bigger than our imagination, came down to us as Jesus, the Son of God made human.

Now we intercede for our country:

2. Pray big.

  • Bring the whole of God into the whole of the UK: Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England.
  • What is the Father’s heart for our nations?  What does he want to do?
  • Pray that his will be done.
  • (If you’re not sure of his general purposes for humanity, see, for instance, Isaiah 65:17-25.)

3. Pray even bigger.

  • The world is watching the UK.  It has seen a good deal of human folly and confusion.
  • What does God want to show of himself through us now?
  • What is the role he has for us?
  • Is there a specific vision of his Kingdom is he giving you?

Tomorrow's reflection will be briefer and focus on unity and healing: we hope you'll be able to join us as we pray each day.
