Knives on our Streets

Prayer about the violence on our streets

Inspiration from Zechariah 8

"Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets... each with staff in hand because of great age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets."  (Zechariah 8:3-4)

There have been 27 fatalities from stabbings so far this year in London, and more due to gun crime.  Last year there were 14,725 knife crimes with 74 fatalities.

Increasing numbers of children excluded from school.

Evidence of children being drawn into gangs.

We need to pray about these things, and we need our vision for prayer to be informed by God's word and what He can do.

"Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets... each with staff in hand because of great age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets."  (Zechariah 8:3-4)

What inspiration! And what a challenge to the state of today… Young and old, sitting and playing on the same street, in harmony and with the sounds of laughter and chatter and children’s play. Let’s call on God to bring his peace to our streets.

Ideas of what to pray for:

  • children/young people
  • those who have been drawn into gangs
  • families, in all their different forms, absent parents
  • schools/teachers - wisdom in dealing with difficult children (alternatives to exclusions)
  • social services, health professionals, police, for a joined-up approach to supporting vulnerable families
  • children who have been excluded
  • churches
  • youth clubs and youth centres - sufficient funding where these depend on local government grants
  • social services, health professionals
  • local and national politicians and policy making.

Let's pray for lives to be turned around.

Remember Saul of Tarsus.

He left Jerusalem intent on murder and arrived in Damascus a different person.

Let's pray that those intent on violence today would meet Jesus Christ and be turned around.
